10K Training – Determining the Right Training Schedule for You

Those who are running races of any distance, such as the 10K, need to complete the proper training so that they will be ready for their race. The right 10K training schedule will depend on your fitness level and experience, as well as the time that you have available for your training.

It is relatively easy to find any number of 10K training schedules available for free on the internet. This will be particularly helpful for novice or inexperienced runners since they will help to prevent the common mistake of overdoing things and then burning out. Check a few of these schedules out to get a better idea of what is involved and which ones might best suit your schedule.

There are a number of key components to any 10K training schedule. The most important thing is that you include rest days, where you don’t run. Another important thing is to mix things up. You don’t want to run as far as you can or as hard as you can every day. Some days it is better to take a break from running altogether and cross train or do strength training. In general you want to have some days include longer or harder runs and others include easier runs. You need these easier days and rest days in order to give your body a break and limit the chances of injury.

It is a good idea to actually follow some type of schedule, whether it is one that you design yourself after looking at the different options that are available, or one that you get online or in a book. Not having a schedule is a good way to end up getting off track and not actually fitting in your training. You need to add your training time into your calendar and treat it like an appointment.

There are some reasons when it is best to skip a training session however. You don’t want to run or work out if you are injured, since it is likely to make the injury worse. Speak with your doctor to figure out when it is okay to resume your training. You also probably don’t want to run outdoors when the weather is bad. Consider make these days rest days, cross training days, strength training days, or going to an indoor track.
